What miscalculations did you make and how did you avoid disaster? (from Activity 1) Check out Into the Wild from the library. Guiding Question for the Module: What kind of person was Chris McCandless, and what was he trying to do? What kind of evidence does the author, Jon Krakauer, use to explain what kind of person Chris McCandless was? Reading Goal for this week: Chapters 1-3. Read the Author's Note. Answer the questions about the Author's Note. Look at the three things to keep track of throughout the book: the map, the epigraphs, and the vocabulary log. Start reading Chapter 1. Outcome: Students will continue reading Chapter 3 and participate in a discussion about author's purpose.. Agenda: No warmup. Discuss author's purpose, in particular, why Krakauer is writing about Chris McCandless, and how Krakauer presents McCandless in each chapter. Use the charting worksheet as a starting point for the discussion. Continue reading Chapter 3; turn in the worksheet with the Author's Note questions and the Chapters 1-3 questions by tomorrow. FRIDAY: Purpose: To read aloud rough drafts in order to get feedback before writing a final draft. To learn more about grammar rules if time. Outcome: Students from designated alpha group will read aloud; others will give feedback. Agenda: Check that Chapters 1-3 are completed. Read Aloud Friday A-D. Grammar activity: TBA. For homework: Discuss reading strategies that students may decide to use over the winter break in order to finish the book in a timely manner.
